2/26/98 Because I like to "fiddle" with Microsoft Flight Simulator, I have lots of little utilities lying around. I thought I might upload this one in case someone else might like to use it. All it does is "locate" BGL (scenery) files by reading the file header to see what specific geographic area the file covers. This can be handy for finding specific BGLs in order to study, modify or delete them. For example, I once used it to find files on the Southern California Expansion Pack CD. It helped me find only those files needed to produce the USS Lincoln (aircraft carrier) off the coast of San Diego. LOCBGL works with FS5, FS95 and FS98. Version 1.2 allows one to enter a specific coordinate point in degrees, minutes and seconds of latitude and longitude. Whenever a BGL is highlit, the program not only displays the area covered by the file but also indicates whether the entered point is contained within that area. If the point is not contained in the BGL, the program immediately reports "no." If the point IS contained within the file's area, it reports "YES!" This feature can save time and prevent headaches. You can find important reference coordinates by entering SLEW mode in FS5, FS95 or FS98. To install, simply place the LOCBGL.EXE file in any directory. The program interface has a directory/folder box with which to search each drive for BGLs. When a BGL is highlit, its minimum and maximum latitude and longitude are displayed. Since this is a Visual Basic 3.0 program, you will need a copy of VBRUN300.DLL in \WINDOWS\SYSTEM. This utility is freeware; please feel free to share it. It should not harm your computer but, if you imagine it has, I accept no liability.
